At the end of the year 1135, the English king Henry I died unexpectedly and left no male heir. Henry's daughter, Empress Matilda, believed she should rule gradually. However, the favored nephew of the deceased king, Stephen de Blois (“the blue”), ascended to the throne more quickly and, with the help of his brother, the Bishop of Winchester, was crowned king.

Those who were loyal to the Empress were furious at Stephen's coronation and did not accept him as their new ruler. Over the next eighteen years, England experienced a breakdown of law and order as civil war spread throughout the country. This conflict became known as “anarchy”...

In the game The Anarchy players take on the role of English nobles loyal to King Stephen. Over five rounds, players must build their domain, defend their castle from the attacks of approaching angelic armies, and assault fortresses loyal to Matilda with self-made siege weapons. The player who can gather the most valor, loyalty, influence, and strength while avoiding discontent – proves to King Stephen that they are his most loyal ally, thus earning his greatest count title.
